Man Sets Fire to Nativity Scene, Police Say
Apparently in an Attempt to Set Church Ablaze
AP
RICHMOND, Calif. (Jan. 7) - A man walked into a church, doused a nativity scene with a flammable liquid and set it ablaze in front of a practicing choir, police said. Robert Mills, 40, of San Pablo, was arrested Friday night while hiding in a park minutes after police said he walked into St. Cornelius Parish and announced he was going to set the church on fire.

Mills told everyone to leave but blocked the doorway until he began showering the sanctuary with the liquid, giving choir members a chance to escape, said Richmond Police Lt. Enos Johnson.

The fire destroyed the nativity scene, a lectern and carpeting, and caused extensive smoke damage. No one was injured.

Prosecutors will likely charge Mills with arson and possibly false imprisonment because the building was occupied when the fire occurred, police said.

"If they establish it's a hate crime, they could go in that direction," Johnson said.

Mills remained in custody at a detention facility in Martinez on Saturday. It was not clear if he had an attorney.

Don't forget that it IS politically correct to bash/hate Christians. No one will really care about this.

I dont see hate crime here. Maybe he was upset that they didnt take it down in a reasonable amount of time. I mean xmas was like a month ago. Maybe this was an anti-procrastination act.

If it were a mosque or a synagogue people would be screaming hate.

Dude... think how pissed youd be if you walked into work in March and there was still hearts and naked chubby toddlers shooting arrows hanging all over the walls.

I get the impression from the article that the nativity scene was inside the church. He wouldn't have known it existed if he didn't go inside. It wouldn't have just been some eyesore beside the street.

Exactly. It's not PC to hate Muslims or Jews.

I think everyone plays this role, no?

True, but it rings particularly hollow in a country that is 70-90% made up of the "oppressed" group and the "oppressed" group dominates legislative, executive, and judicial offices, the police force, the military, the civil service, and the educational system.

WTF is a "hate" crime anyway? Is there a "love" or "compassion" crime? How about a "mercy" or "charity" crimes?

Judge: Do you admit to killing your mother-in-law?

Defendat: Yes, but I really loved her!

i'm guessing they'd leave the nativity scene up for at least the whole 12 days of xmas, which just ended last week. in any event it IS a CHURCH, not some office building.

Christmas wasn't "a month ago", try 2 weeks. It is common place to keep Christmas decorations up until the Feast of the Epiphany anyway (January 6th).

Same. Just the image of a guy walking into a church, dousing a nativity scene with flammable liquid, then lighting it on fire is sorta funny in a "what-the-******-was-he-thinking" way.
