If they are deemed not to be a danger to themselves, or other humans, they must be released and all mental care must be voluntary. >>

Have you seen the life of a mentally ill person who refuses treatment??? Most of our homeless are mentally ill people who, with supervision and treatment could lead productive lives. But because we are not allowed to force treatment, they live the way they do.

I'm not talking about jail, but treatment, be it inpatient, or outpatient.

Putting people in a mental institution because they are mentally ill according to some reports, is a dangerous thing. If you create a law like that, it could lead to abuses, people could get in trouble because they angered a police officer, whose evil brother is a doctor, and whose evil sister is a judge. They could land up in a mental institution, which is probably paid per capita, so they would have every benefit keeping their patients in as long as possible. In theory, if there was no possibility for abuse, it could be a fine law though.

but that law could open the door to some very easy abuses where people could get disposed off very easily. That's why imho, people who aren't dangerous shouldn't get forcefully put in a mental institution. therapy is something different, but that's not enforcable, so a mental clinic is sadly the only workable way to force people into therapy.

oh, and 9 months??? that's 270 LONG days inbetween 4 walls, i could understand a week, and maybe a month too, but common 9 months, that's insane. people who harm other people with their full mental capacities (including iron bars )get punishments like that.
