He refuses to take care of himself.

This wasn't an accident. He wasn't born with a disease. He wasn't attacked by someone else. He did this to himself. No party affiliation will take on the responsibility of purposely screwing yourself over.

You sound like a republican now. If this topic was about welfare and the person was a democrat, I'd expect to see a republican say the same thing.

So like I said. I guess it just depends what team you are on and who the person we're talking about is.

Most of the donations he is getting are from liberals.

What's going to happen is liberals will save his life and his eyesight and he'll continue to vote Republican even though it's not in his own best interests. And you know when someone else has an issue similar to him, he'll talk about how they were irresponsible. It's the Republican playbook.

See above.

This has far less to do with being a Republican, and far more to do with being an idiot, imo.

I don't like the PPACA, but I'm not stupid enough to try to do without any insurance.

Let alone all the other stupid things the guy has done regarding his health.

The key fact missing from the OP is that he claims the cost of the treatment went from $80 to $610 because of the ACA. In other words, without Obamacare he wouldn't need insurance to afford treatment.

That said, he took the insurance gamble and lost. If he is truly living the ideology, he has at least 20% equity in his $300,000 house, so he can sell the house, prepay a year's rent somewhere, get the treatment, resume work, and then buy a cheaper house.

I guess you should learn how to manage your diabetes if you're going to gamble on not having insurance.

ive always wondered why cant you enroll whenever you want, was is there a "enrolment period"

seems stupid IMO
Because it's an insurance scheme. If everyone waits until they get sick to buy in then the scheme doesn't work. People would be hopping in and out of the plans in response to their current health condition and the plans would go broke.

I'm not following. I'd say the same thing if he were a D. He refused to take care of himself. He refused to carry insurance. He's not real bright, imo.

Yeah but that claim is most likely bullshit. There's no plausible reason why the price for that procedure would increase 700% due to the ACA.

The pack of smokes in the front pocket is a nice touch for a health story photo.

Sure, but in the end if his stupidity doesn't have consequences then why should he change his behavior? Now what will happen is that the bleeding hearts will bail him out, and some other sucker who was reponsible but unlucky (say had the same condition and health insurance, but still piled up high bills) will get screwed over because we use all our money to help the first idiot.

Basically if you try to do the right thing and be responsible, then should you ever come to need help the progressives will prioritize you lower than the person who knowingly made bad choices and acted stupidly.

I want to donate enough to really help you out, but I can't figure out how to get GoFundMe to accept bootstraps

That's the top comment on his GoFundMe page, and it is pure gold. But I do hope the guy gets the help he needs; losing eyesight must be a terrifying proposition. I just hope he can take the opportunity to reflect on how he is personally responsible for every decision that led him to this place and change his behavior going forward, both in terms of his physical behavior (such as smoking with diabetes) and lashing out at other people with blame instead of accepting responsibility for his situation. And hopefully he'll be able to get insured in due time to help mitigate his health problems going forward.

Are you suggesting that the people donating to this ultraconservative guy's GoFundMe are bleeding heart liberals? That seems unlikely.

It is interesting how you still found a way to rage against liberals when a super conservative guy revealed himself to be a giant hypocrite.

Actually, yes. Why do they feel the need to be condescending? I surely don't feel the need to so when I make charitable donations.

Maybe it's self hate that make them feel the need to do such.

Maybe it's because this is a teachable moment? If anyone is undeserving of charity, it's somebody who not only engages in risky behavior, but does so proudly, with a holier-than-thou attitude, who then starts whining about how life is unfair when his risky behavior catches up with him. I mean, the wife's quote about how he should get bumped to the front of the line? How tone-deaf can you possibly be? But maybe this guy will change his tune about liberals if self-professed liberals are the ones who bail him out of the inevitable result of his poor decision-making. Maybe he'll continue to be an unrepentant ideologue in the face of overwhelming evidence that he's been wrong about everything, but who knows?

Maybe it's just the liberal tax for the guilt of schadenfreude.
