WHITTIER, February 18 - A Mexican immigrant who found a purse at a park was allegedly shot in the head when he sought a reward for returning the item to its rightful owner.
Clinio Manuel Martinez, a lawn trimmer, was taking a lunch break at Adventure Park on Feb. 10 when he found the purse containing a cell phone and other items belonging to Tammy Anderson, said detectives with the Whittier Police Department.
Martinez, who is in his 20s, later received a call from Anderson, 35, on the cell phone. They met later that night in the parking lot of a hamburger restaurant, where Martinez was to return the purse to Anderson and receive a $50 reward he had asked for, said Whittier police detective Sam Reed.
When Martinez and an unidentified cousin met Anderson, she was with her brother-in-law, Mark Anderson, and at least one other person. Witnesses told Reed that a shoving match broke out among the group.
Authorities said Tammy Anderson balked at the reward and tried to grab the purse and leave. Detectives believe Mark Anderson got out of a car, shot Martinez in the head, and then drove off.
The pair was arrested later in the week, detectives said. Tammy Anderson has been booked for investigation of first-degree murder and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Mark E. Anderson, 38, also was booked for investigation of first-degree murder and his bail was set at $1 million.
Martinez is on life-support at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. He is not expected to live, police said.
