That quote makes me laugh. Urine is relatively sterile. But dead animals are ok? sigh....

Not directly into the reservoir but pissed through the fence on the shore rocks. What the idiots(three idiots where there)did was video it and post it on line. Public knowledge, public outcry gets the reservoir drained.

Glory in pissing in peoples drinking water. A proper punishment would be scrubbing the empty reservoir with toothbrushes.

Would you be OK with someone spitting in your food Strk?

Considering the amount of bacteria in the mouth? Nope. But the point is, it may sound gross, but urine is sterile. The urine is probably the cleanest thing in that reservoir.

Water is cheap and a liability claim from someone who claims to have been sickened by urine-infected water isn't.

A guy peed in a water reservoir that serves Portland, Oregon and officials have freaked out!

So, it's OK if rotting animals are in the water but not pee? Don't you guys treat the water before pumping it to people?

This isn't the first time the reservoir has been drained, once for a prior peeing incident, once for a skinny dipping couple, and once during a e coli outbreak. It appears that the city doesn't treat the water.

Untreated strikes me as madness.

It's filtered & chlorinated further upstream at what's called the headworks. Google Portland water. More than a few cities have open air storage of treated water, I'm sure. With sufficient chlorine, the water is antiseptic, killing germs before they arrive at the tap. As the article points out, the EPA is working with the city to create covered reservoirs for treated water. Denver, for example, has several, one in Congress Park.

Portland officials have to deal with it as an issue of perception & liability, particularly with the video. If they didn't drain the reservoir, they'd get lawsuits claiming everything from emotional distress to sterility & brain damage.

Better hope our enemies don't develop an internal radioactive pee. But then they'd need some mechanism to sneak past radioactivity detectors which may already be set up in some outlying parts of cities.

Urine is waste and contains heavy metals, but that amount compared to the amount in the water tank pretty much won't cause anything to anyone, but a virus or a bacteria would be more likely to be a reason of concern and caution.

That said, I think the more important thing is this: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/05/22/portland-fluoride-water/2350329/

Lucky.

Still, my place doesn't even chlorinate, nor it has open air storage. :p

This is more like someone spitting in the field where his food is grown.

Imagine if a flock of birds flew over the reservoir! Or if lawn chemicals washed into it when it rains!
:D

Agreed. Chlorine evaporates. Even chloramine breaks down. Treatment should be as it is being pumped into the pipes.

I saw that one and had to laugh a bit the other day.

Dumping something like 13 million gallons of water over that.

Complete idiocy.

We used to have a reservoir up north when I was growing up 40 years ago people swam in over the summer.

Go figure, and even then was cleaner than most groundwater these days i imagine.

If they dump all that water is sheer stupidity.
