Paying an extrodinary amount for lucky numbers on license plates and phone numbers is not unheard of in the chinese society.
Why? because a lot of them are superstitious, especially businessmen, and also the braggin rights factor.
When you see an 88888 number on somoone's license plate in china, you do not want to mess with them. They are either rich, or powerful, or both.

But why would anyone pay that much for a phone number? because he can.
Same as someone buying a rolls royce, because they can.

The face value of the number is next to nothing, but essentially paying 1.1mil for it makes your penis longer than others(in the context of braggin rights).

Apparently if he's able to afford to spend over a million dollars on a phone number he's already lucky AND rich!

"if i ever move i want to get a real easy phone number, something like 222-2222. So if someone wants to get a hold of me, I'll just say 'Just press 2 for a while, when I answer you know you have pressed it enough"

I don't get it. The guy was already rich, why did he need to buy a phone number that will supposedly make him rich?? This sounds like a case of idiocy to me.

It's for bragging rights. Obviously he already is well off. When people see his phone # he wants them to say oohhhh and awwwww. Just like when someone wears a rolex.

That may be true but I think this is a Chinese thing, I really don't understand the whole Chinese system of luck. I saw this documentary on TV about how the Chinese arrange furniture in their office according to some mythological system of luck. Supposedly if everything is arranged the correct way the business will have good fortune so they bring in so called "experts" in this field of office furniture arrangement to put everything in the proper place. Totally nuts if you ask me.

LOL @ Mitch Hedberg too.

No he didn't, I did. Quite a while ago. I guess subtlety is not appreciated around here.
