The allegation was this never happens and that we were all paranoid.

I think the question boils down to is it actually trumped up? If he really funneled the $20,000 in donations through third parties, than he should be punished. Of course, I would like to see EVERYONE who does this punished, but that is for another topic.

This. Clinton had several Chinese and Indonesian donors like this, and had they not fled the country they almost certainly would have been prosecuted even though their benefactor was President. This is not selective prosecution, it is common practice.
