Well, as some of you may know, the past two summers I have worked for my school district as a computer technician. Throughout the year, I kept in touch with my boss to make sure that I, as long as the people I work with, would have jobs. A few weeks ago, I saw the boss in school doing some work, and started talking about him. He said all of our jobs were determinant on the budget passing, and they would let us know what happens after the vote. So, after the budget passes with flying colors, I wait for a call. Two days later, I call the office. He tells us that they are still not sure, and will let us know in a few days.

Now, on Monday his secretary calls all of us, and asks us all if we are still interested in the job, and of course we say yes. Now, I wait until yesterday, and when I didn't get a call I called the office. We are supposed to start next week if we were working, so I wanted to find everything out. Now, this time I speak to the boss. I say to him "So, do you have any updates on the summer technology program?" He says "Yes and no." Now, he proceeds to explain to me the dilemma.

He says that only two, out of the eight people are being hired back. He says that the decision on who was being hired back, came completely above his head, and he had no power in the decision making process. He says the following "Their parents knew someone who has power, and that is the sole reason they specifically got the job." I then ask who got the job, and he tells me. One kid is his secretaries son, which I knew would get the job. Now, this kid did no work last summer, and left everyday early, but simply because his mom is my bosses secretary, he got the job. The other kid got the job because his mom was PTA president. Now, let me preface my next part with the following. The first summer, only 6 kids worked. I, and one of the other kids asked our boss to hire two of our friends. They did for the second summer. Now, the kid who was being hired back for the third summer, was the kid I originally got the job for.

Now, the kicker, he says the rest of us are pretty much screwed. We will not be working with technology, and if the district decides to hire us back, we would be so as janitors. Now this has got me, and all my other coworkers pissed off.

The part that especially has us all mad is the fact that they told us now, one week before summer is really begun. They knew months ago only 2 people were being hired back, and could have figured out then who was working. So now me, along with my other coworkers have to find jobs within a week, unless we want to be janitors.

Now, for the looking up part:
After I found out what happened, I called up a former boss of mine whom I interned for a while with. I left a message on his voicemail telling him I am interested in a job, and to call me back when he had a chance. Also, after I told my mom what happened, she called my uncle, and a family friend, who both were able to hook me up with technology jobs if I wanted. One would be pure software development, and the other wold be all around IT/CSE. This is all within yesterday. Yesterday night, my uncle called me back and told me that if I like, I can go in on Monday for an interview with his contact.

Now, today, my former boss called me back, telling me that I would have a job, and a paying one at that, if I would like it. I told him yes, and he said to come in on Monday to fill out all the paperwork, and to get a parking permit. This is the job I truly want, because it will be involving science, and engineering. I told him yes, and that I would be in. In this job, I will be doing risk assessment for government contracts (a lot of NASA stuff). My first project would be the risk of resupplying the Hubbell space telescope (cool stuff). By the way, the company is SAIC if anyone is familiar with it.

So now, I went from having no job, to having 4 jobs. I love how life can kick you in the ass one day, and then come back to your rescue the next. Barring extreme circumstances, I will be working for SAIC.

Cliff notes:
1) School district screws me out of job I was told I would have.
2) Gave me the option to work as a janitor, instead of computer consultant, and for less money at that.
3) Called an old boss who I interned with, and left a message.
4) Told mom, who also called a few people who set me up.
5) Got a call back form old boss, and will be working for him at SAIC doing risk assessment on gov't contracts (mainly NASA ones).
6) Went from having no job, to having 4 job offers.
7) Read whole story, you might find it interesting, and it fills in a lot of blanks.

just goes to show that it doesn't matter HOW good you are, all you need is some family or friends on the high to hand you a job.

It's a broken system for sure...but no one seems to care.

Well, this is what my mom said. "It's not what you know, it's who you know." And I agree with her, and whoever came up with that quote originally.

I read the whole story and I have to say congrats Marauder911

<-- Expects high-res :camera:'s from the Hubbell e-mailed to him on a regular basis! 😀

Thanks. to you too. Hey, if I get some good photos that aren't confidential or something, I will definitely send them your way.

Congratulations. I am considering actually quitting my job soon, and I'm already making my list of contacts so that I can have a job lined up when I do.
