2001 (and 2010) are awesome movies, and anyone who doesn't agree with this is either wrong, or just too young. :p

2001 is a great movie. Understanding the ending is a whole lot easier if you read the book.

Bah, you guys.

:p

I like it...so screw you. ;)

It's got a very familiar feel to Kubrick's other film...the Shining...did you guys like that?

Oh, it's a classic, it's just those last few shots, which are...well, they're what I think shrooms might be like...

Well, true (and that part is on now). It's the little subtle things. Hal's soothing monotone voice, how all you hear is the breathing when Dave is outside in the space suit, how Hal sings that song as he is diconnected, and I do like the very end part where Dave is in the room (after the phychedelic part)...

:)
HAL sings "A Bicycle Built for Two" ("Daisy") as he is shut down; this was the first song ever "sung" by a computer, a IBM 7094 computer at Bell Labs in 1961. Furthermore, the lyrics include the phrase "I'm half crazy".

It helps if you read the book, it helps explain the acid trip scenes at the end. Most younger people don't seem to appreciate movies with plots, good dialogue, acting and direction. But are more interested in fast-paced, booby showing, expensive but crappy looking special effects, horribly acted movies with gigantic plot holes.

Agreed. I also was confused by the ending until I read the book. I also understood the impact/purpose of the monolith after reading the book.

2001: A Space Odyssey was an amazing accomplishment for Sci-Fi movies. I think people don't appreciate the leap in special effects because of the movies that followed. Arthur C. Clarke explained it perfectly on the dvd I have.

It's a good film, particularly watched without interruptions

I think TCM played the original, unedited version. I don't think I've ever seen a movie with an intermission screen that goes up for 5 minutes, and there were zero commercials.

TCM is good about showing a movie properly. I hope they eventually do an HD version of that channel.

I would go so far as to say that TCM is the only channel on tv that shows movies properly, and that includes premium movie channels.

EDIT: I forgot about IFC - they show movies properly as well. By "properly" I mean unedited in every way, and displayed in the film's original aspect ratio.

********* SPOILERS **********

I really enjoyed 2001 until the pretentious and, to my eyes, incoherent scenes at the end, which left me feeling I had wasted my time.

Does everything have to be fast paced now? I liked movies back when they actually had dialog in them.

Oddly enough, someone (maybe Roger Ebert) said that 2001 works equally well as a silent film. The film is so well crafted that the viewer doesn't need the dialog to understand what is going on at any given time.

I wanted to like it, but I just wasn't into it. I had no clue what was going on with the ending or monoliths etc. Maybe I will try to get some cliffs or read the book and watch it again.

I like how people say that "you're too young" or "you dont appreciate classics" if you didnt like 2001. You dont know my age, you dont know what movies I like, you just like making assumptions based on one movie.

I didnt like it, that's what we call an "opinion". I thought it was boring and the ending was garbage. You should not have to read a book just to understand what happened.

I'm with you, Insane3D; I love that movie. The whole thing rocks. 2010 is almost as good as the original.

I remember the first time I saw 2001; it was way back in 1984. I thought it was the best thing ever. You have to think and imagine and be there w/the characters.

Or, more accurately, the viewer cannot understand what is going on at any given time DESPITE having dialog. It's a lot of beautiful cinematography and amazing special effects, yet you have to read a companion book to actually understand the plot.

Sorry but telling a cohesive story is, IMHO, a key element in making a truly great movie...an element that 2001 is lacking.

Very excellent movie. Some of the greatest cinematography ever, quite typical of Kubric.

To those of you who didn't enjoy it, you have to realise that it is as much a complete metaphorical expression as a plot based movie. If you are just wondering what the hell that big black thing has to do with anything without actually thinking about everything, you will probably be left scratching your head.
