Well there's this girl at work, really hot and whatnot but never really was interested in her before. Lately we've talked quite a bit more, and we've smoked together a few times. It's seemed like she't noticed me a lot more lately and whatnot, and today I was walking with her out to our cars from work and I was pretty out of it, and I started talking to her and I didn't hear what she said, it sounded like she was talking to someone else, so I thought she was on her cell phone. I kept walking out with her, but she was talking and I thought she was talking on her phone so I didn't want to seem like I was even listening...and then like an hour ago I realized she was talking to me the whole time, I feel like such an as$hole.

Perhaps you guys were smoking two entirely different plants?

Sounds like if you want to pursue something, it's time for you to make an effort.

Who said she was talking for an hour? It was maybe a minute or two, and it was outside/dark.

Well, in a sitcom you could invent some wacky lie, leading to another and another until the audience is howling with laughter and you're pretending to go in for major surgery.

In real life you might try saying something like "I was really tired and brain-dead and I thought you were talking on your cell phone so I didn't want to eavesdrop, so uh what were you saying?." Simple and honest.

Were you high or something? I've never quite heard of a similar story. There have been times where I wasn't paying much attention to what someone was telling me, or I did more talking than listening, but this is quite odd. You're talking to her, but you're ignoring what she is saying, because you thought she was talking on the cell phone? Why try to talk to someone at all if they're on a cell phone? Weird.

Just tell her something like "I don't know if you noticed or not, but when we were walking out to our cars Sunday, my mind was a million miles away when you were talking. I'm sorry if I didn't seem like I was listening to you, I kinda had a lot on my mind."

It happens to everyone, if she doesn't understand then too bad for her.

On the other hand, if she responds favorably, then immediately follow with, "So, you wanna get nekkid and do it?" That will make a good impression on her. heh

I don't pay attention when people talk to me, unless it seems important or they say my name before they start so it is directly addressed to me.

Thank you. I have a problem with this at Job#1. My cubicle faces backwards, IOW when you walk over to my area, my back is to you. About half the folks in my office walk over and say "you know, I can't my printer to print b/c the icon is grayed-out and I really don't know what's wrong." And they stand there. Then they say "um....Mike?" and I turn around, smile and say "hello, can I help you?"

They say "didn't you hear what I just said?" Of course, I say "no, where you talking to me, because I didn't hear my name being addressed." They know I do that on purpose, just how I know that THEY do it on purpose as well.

If I'm not important enough to be called by name, then you aren't important enough for me to answer. I think that's fair.

Of course, if one of my two bosses does that, then I jump up out of my seat to assist them w/whatever they may need. Then, I wipe the brown off my nose. :D

Get one of those monitor-mounted rearview mirrors. Learn to use it well. Train yourself to look in it whenever you hear footsteps or the boss's voice. I was once in your shoes. That mirror saved me much trouble from accidentally "ignoring" my boss or being caught screwing around. It also allowed me to selectively "ignore" people just to annoy them :)
