A man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend's mother at separate locations during a Thursday shooting spree that included a stop at an Essex, Vermont, elementary school, police said.
The rampage in the rural Vermont town came to an end when the gunman turned the weapon on himself, police said.
In all, four people were wounded, including the shooter, according to police. The gunman was being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. (Watch how the tragedy unfolded -- 1:14)
Eyewitness Peter Bearor told WCAX television that the suspect was "bleeding profusely."
Only staff and faculty were on hand at the school when the shooting took place. Classes at Essex Elementary School are scheduled to begin next week.
The shootings took place at three locations in the town, Essex Police Chief David Demag said.
"At this point the scenes are secured and the community is safe," Demag said. "We have a suspect in custody, and he has been identified as the only shooter."
Demag said he could not identify the shooter. The motive was unclear, he said, but it appeared to stem from a domestic dispute.
The shooter first shot his ex-girlfriend's mother at one location, then went to the school, where he shot his former girlfriend, the chief said. At a third location, he wounded one person before turning the gun on himself, said Demag.
Police said earlier that two people were wounded at the school.
Fletcher Allen Health Care Center Hospital spokesman Mike Noble said doctors were treating three people in their emergency department. He would not comment on their conditions.
Thirty staff members were in the school when the suspect entered, police said.
Essex is located 100 miles (165 kilometers) south of Montreal, Canada. It lies just across the New York-Vermont border from New York's Adirondack Park.
I can't believe something like this would happen this close to home.
