What's wrong with what the father did? Why should he take justice into his own hands and risk going to prison?
He diffused the situation and handled it admirably, without putting his future at stake.

A certain amount of force is fully justified when you have an unknown intruder in your home. I imagine a greater amount of force would be allowed when said intruder is in your daughter's room, and you are summoned by her screams. You actually think any jury in this country would send him to prison?

I don't know, but I don't blame him for not wanting to spend thousands in attorney fees to find out.
He did use sufficient force to protect his daughter and even restrain the suspect until the police arrived.
