LMFAO! :)

A man is accused of lying to Hoke County lawmen about being with a friend who was electrocuted in August as the two tried to steal copper from a power substation.

Jonathan Tyler Overton, 20, of the 9300 block of Calloway Road in Aberdeen, was charged Tuesday with damaging wires and other fixtures of a telephone, telegraph or electric power company and obstructing justice by filing a false police report, larceny and possessing stolen property.

The incident happened Aug. 14, according to a release from the Hoke County Sheriff's Office.

William Joshua Reavis, 23, of the 9400 block of Calloway Road in Aberdeen, was found dead at a Lumbee River Electric Membership Corp. substation on North Horace Walters Road, Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said.

At the time, investigators suspected that Reavis was electrocuted while trying to steal copper wire, Peterkin said.

Investigators found that a lock and chain on the high fence around the business had been cut, Peterkin said.

They also said they believed someone else was involved, Peterkin said.

Overton was at the substation when lawmen arrived, Peterkin said, but denied having anything to do with the theft of copper.

Overton later admitted that after Reavis was electrocuted, he removed the copper wiring and cutters that were inside the fence and hid them in tall grass where they were later found, Peterkin said.

Overton's bail was set at $25,000.

copper theft is becoming a huge problem. i live in farm country and copper thieves are stealing copper wire from the huge irrigation sprinklers that farmers have out in their fields. some farmers have been hit several times costing 10's of thousands of dollars in repairs.

Copper salvaging is damn profitable though. It is why these idiots keep trying it. Before my brother joined the army him and his buddy used to drive around the wood and scrap shit people dumped out on polelines and such. Used to make pretty decent bank for a the work.

The sound and the smell of a fat-bodied moth hitting a bug zapper come to mind.

Similar to a local story. Woman calls repair service to get her air conditioning fixed. Service man arrives and then promptly tells the woman the reason your AC isn't working is because someone took it, apparently while she was asleep.

People are not just stealing AC units for copper. My brother who owns a business has had several people approach him trying to sell almost new heat pumps.

The "victim" of this electrocution is what happens when Mr Murphy meets Mr Darwin.

I wonder how long it's going to be, before one of these geniuses figures out the easiest place to steal copper might just be the recycling center that's buying it!! :sneaky:

This happened to another asshole here in TN a couple of years back, power line was a bit too close to the Comcast Cable line.
