Our dog, normally the sweetest, most calm-tempered dog, just went apeshit on our mailman. He was tied up outside and walked out slowly toward the mailman as he approached, then took off toward him, growling and barking. Argh. :|

Talked to the mailman for a while, he was cool about it -- said that his dog used to do the same thing, and that he doesn't take it personally, it's just something dogs seem to universally do towards mailmen. Sucks, because when Neeko was about a year younger, he used to play with the same guy...now he's gotten all defensive. He's 2.5 years old now, and acts a lot more protective over the house, etc.

He's down in the basement right now as punishment. Just sucks to see your dog turn vicious toward a nice person. :p

Well, I work from home, so I doubt it. :D

It's time to start reconditioning him to be nicer when the mailman comes around. More training work. :p

thats sad :( poor doggy probably doesnt realize what he did wrong. if he has never exhibited that kind of behavior, maybe you should watch him more carefully and see if it is more frequent than you initially expected. also, locking him in the basement will do no good. unless punishment is dealth within a matter of seconds, animals forget what they did and will not learn to not do it again.

When I delivered papers... a few years ago, this one family had a long haired dachshund who would growl at me. Of course the owners told me not to worry about it, yada, yada. One day the little shlt jumped out of the bushes and bit my calf. It drew blood, and my mom was not too happy when she found out later. And, of course, the owners said I must have provoked it, because their precious would never do such a thing. Fvcking pet owners and their worthless animals. :disgust:

My dogs bark at the mailman/delivery guy always. They never growl.

But once you get near them, them bastards just want you to pet them. :p

Why is it always mailmen ?? I think they tend to be aggressive toward many in uniform. My dog knows my uncle and is only growling and barking furiously at him when he's at work in his uniform. During family outings... nothing. Something must've happened to him when he was at the pound..

Very well. We take him to dog parks 2-3x/week, walk him, and he hangs out outside frequently. We don't have a fence, so he's tied to a run normally, and will lay down to be pet by people walking by, etc. The only person he's exhibited a problem with (barking at), whatsoever, is the mailman. He's come outside to play with both the FedEx guy and the UPS guy before without problems.

He used to play with Tim (the mailman), but in the past year has started barking more and more at him. This is the first time it's ever seemed beyond the usual defensive posturing, though. We're going to immediately start working on reconditioning him to like the mailman, but that will take a while; fortunately Tim was very understanding about it. He even mentioned that his dogs do the same thing to other mailmen. Odd.

That sucks. I can't remember from your past threads -- are you against all dogs now, or were you just referring to that specific one when you said worthless animals?

I'm around him most of the day (I work from home), and he doesn't exhibit the behavior at all, with the exception of the mailman.

Punishment was dealt within a matter of seconds. Neeko went from growling to being on the ground in submissive pose (flipped over by Kate). From there, I immediately took him inside and put him downstairs.

My dog Bacon loves our mailman. He barks when he sees the mail jeep outside so we can take him out to see him. Bacon gets a little dog biscuit from him when he sees him. If we are not home to take Bacon out, the mailman leaves the treat in the mailbox.

Now today Bacon did not take too kindly to the Jehovah's Witnesses' that came by. Bacon really earned his keep for the day! ;)

That's the approach we're taking to recondition him. :D

I don't think the ups/mailmen like our dogs, but not cause they're viscious(s/p) but because whenever they come into the gate the dogs go crazy and start jumping on them I try and teach them not to, but they get so excited when someone comes over they just start jumping and running around(They're horrible guard dogs unless its a cat:p)

I don't understand why mailmen and the like don't wear those ultrasonic pet repellers that they use in those fenceless systems. Seems to me it would make sense to wear them.
