Man deters package thieves

Good for this guy. Screw those thieves. They deserve the deafening blast.

http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle...-thefts-and-police-say-that-could-be-a-crime/

After the fourth time it happened in recent months, Jaireme Barrow was tired of people stealing packages off his South Tacoma front porch.

So he created a device to deter them, and on Dec. 11 set up an alluring bait box containing the contraption.

It started off with a bang as Barrow sat on the couch in his living room.

“I didn’t know what was going on for a minute,” he said. “I thought it was somebody being shot because I heard her scream, so I grabbed my Mace and went outside.”

He was just in time to watch the would-be thief scurry away to a waiting car — after all, shotgun blasts do tend to scare people.

Barrow’s box is pretty simple — it contains a plate holding back a firing pin, connected to a string tied to his interior doorknob. When the box is pulled on hard enough, the plate moves, allowing the firing pin to set off a 12-gauge shotgun blank.

Cue fleeing thief.

“I know it’s crude, but there’s nothing scarier than a 12-gauge,” Barrow said.

Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said she doesn’t think Barrow’s box serves as a deterrent or is a good idea.

“If the would-be package thief is hurt in any way, the homeowner would be responsible,” Cool said.

She also said she thinks what Barrow’s doing might be a crime, but it would be up to prosecutors to make a final call.

“I believe there are criminal charges, but it would be up to them if they charged or not,” Cool said.

Barrow’s box contraption has lured more than one would-be thief, The News Tribune reported.

Another “porch pirate” came to his front doorstep a couple days after the first woman ran off.

(A well-placed doorbell camera lets Barrow — and then the world — see the package trap in action, even if he’s not home.)

The man approached the front door tepidly and was spooked by a motion-sensor light. But a companion in a getaway car seemed to egg him on, so he went back toward the house to grab the package.

Boom.

The man left in such a hurry that Barrow ended up with his cellphone.

“Poetic justice,” he said.

But because the potential thieves didn’t take anything, they could be charged only with trespassing, he said.

While scary, Barrow says, the device is safe. He said he’s tested the box himself “dozens of times,” even putting a tomato inside the box one time to simulate flesh.

“It never hurt me once,” he said. “It didn’t hurt the tomato in there either.”

He says neighbors haven’t complained about the device. Instead, “They think anything that deters people from stealing things from my porch and theirs is a good thing.”

Police spokeswoman Cool said that while the department is not thrilled with Barrow’s booming box, video from his doorbell camera did help officers track down and arrest an alleged thief recently.

I saw that on the local news a few days ago...genius.

IMO, man traps should be legal for use on porch pirates.

yeah the problem is that the police or EMTs might have legitimate reasons to go in people's houses and it's a problem if you set up mantraps.

If they're coming every couple days I'd just stay home from work and introduce them to a real 12-gauge.

Why would police or EMT`s go into your home because you had a box outside to stop thieves??? duh.....

Say he leaves it out overnight and there's a fire, then a firefighter loses a toe when he kicks the box out of the way to get in the door. It's not likely, at all, but that sort of thing is why mantraps are very illegal. I still like his solution though.

because the house can catch on fire while you're at work, or you can have a heart attack right after setting the traps, before you go to work.

According to something I either read or saw he has thoroughly tested his trap, even put a tomato inside of the box and then set it off and it didn't damage the tomato. If it won't damage a tomato inside the box I doubt it's taking a firefighters toe off, although it might stop them from entering the house to put the fire out.

Yeah I saw that too, the toe thing was just for illustration. Either way, emergency personnel don't have time to deal with crap like shotgun blanks blowing up with no warning. They don't know what's going on, it could be harmless or they could be walking into a burning house of IEDs. I believe if they ever hit something like that on a call they have to pull back and watch it burn, but I am not a lawyer or a fireman.

Lawyers be damned, I'd imagine they would just watch it burn versus risking more serious IEDs inside the house but that's just me. I guess it's a risk the homeowner is willing to take, can't say that I blame the guy because fuck porch thieving assholes. Personally I'm impressed with his restraint of using only blanks and testing to make sure no bodily harm would occur. Add a tiny length of the right size pipe, properly secured, pointed in the right direction, add some buckshot and you are guaranteed to catch the fucker every time.

And take a package left on the porch?

well my answer was about traps in general, also for burglars etc., not specifically packages.

But even sticking to the box on the porch, an intervening police officer will not be amused when he activates an IED by kicking the box while walking on a porch.

WTF would a cop kick a box on your porch for?

alright, if you place your box on the side, the policeman might actually not hit it.

Searching for this stuff on google, I've found many websites selling lockable parcel boxes that supposedly invite the courier to leave your package in there. Does this actually work? Because if it does, then shotgun blanks are overengineered.

I'm waiting for one of the thieves to get a good lawyer and sue for intention infliction of emotional distress.

Thief: Sure, I was going to steal the package. What else would I be doing on some stranger's porch. But then I hear this shot gun blast just inches from my ear. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. So the adrenaline kicked in and I hauled ass out of there. It was hours before I could calm down enough to really breath normally I was hyperventilating so much. But things really got bad that night when I went to sleep. I kept waking up over and over in a cold sweat with night terrors. The dreams were all a bit different but each one would end with my being shot, sometime multiple times with a shotgun.

I thought it was just the shock of the initial incident that was the cause but then I started having these dreams night after night and they only became more graphic and horrific. It wasn't long before I imagined the shotgun being shoved up my ass or down my throat and fired. It got so bad that I couldn't sleep at all unless I sedated myself with drugs, alcohol or both. The memory of the dreams even invaded my conscious thoughts so that I had to try to remain sedated most of the time.

Of course I lost my minimum wage job at Walmart because I was too drunk or high to even show up for work any more. I lost my crappy apartment and was living in my car for several months until that was repossessed. And all the while I had to turn to thieving full time in order buy the drugs that helped keep the nightmares at bay.

And it all started because the defendant thought it would be a good idea to try to scare a harmless porch pirate like myself. He has ruined my life and stolen my sanity and no amount of money can compensate for that loss, but 10 million USD might make me feel a little better.
