Man Decapitates Grandmother, Woman In N.J.
OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J -- A man killed his grandmother and another woman Tuesday, decapitating both and cutting off their hands and feet, authorities said.
Rosario "Russell" Miraglia, 31, called police after emerging -- covered in blood -- from his grandmother's home on Lake View Avenue about 10 a.m., according to Monmouth County Prosecutor John Kaye.
He told them there were two dead women in the home, Kaye said.
Police who arrived minutes later forced their way into the home and found the body of 87-year-old Julia Miraglia on the first floor and the body of 31-year-old Leigh L. Martinez on the second floor, Kaye said. Martinez is the former girlfriend of Miraglia and the mother of his child, police said.
Authorities said the two women lived in the house, but the suspect did not.
"It's one of the more disturbing (crime) scenes I've seen," said Lt. Antonio Amodio, an Ocean Township police detective.
A carving knife and a meat cleaver were found on the first floor next to the grandmother's body, Kaye said.
"We know the who, the what, the where and the how. We don't know the why," said Kaye.
Police were summoned to the home after a relative came to visit.
Upon hearing knocks by the relative -- an uncle -- Miraglia opened the door, then asked if he could use the uncle's cellular telephone.
Miraglia then called police. When officers arrived, he put his hands behind his back. When an officer asked him why, he said "Once you go inside, you'll see," Kaye said.
Miraglia was charged with two counts of murder and was being held on $2 million bail.
The two-story single family home is in an upscale neighborhood in Ocean Township known as "Colonial Terrace".
Kevin Lang, 47, who lives across the street, called the slayings "a complete shock."
Next-door neighbor Lee Warner said she didn't know anything had happened at the adjacent home until police cruisers arrived.
"We were here and I didn't hear a thing," said Warner, who is a housewife.
