A 19-year-old Midlander died in what police believe was an accidental shooting involving a .22 caliber pistol early Monday.

The shooting occurred in the basement of an East Ashman Street home, said Midland Police Deputy Chief Bob Lane.

Lane said the man's girlfriend, who also lived at the home, said the man had made comments about the gun in the past, as well as putting it to his head and pulling the trigger. Monday about 4:45 a.m., she was watching a movie when he began to repeat the behavior, and she heard him make a comment about the gun having two safeties before putting the barrel in his mouth and pulling the trigger, causing the gun to fire.

She told police that he played with the gun to scare her.

The man was pronounced dead in the home.

The man's girlfriend said he had consumed two strong drinks before the incident occurred.

I worked with this guy once that did pretty much the same thing. He said the pistol would fire of the muzzle was pressed against something, he then pressed it into the palm of his hand and BLEW A HUGE HOLE THROUGH HIS HAND.

Also, he was sitting inside a car at the time, which I sure didn't help his hearing at all either....

QFT. Some pistols do have two "safeties" so to speak. On the 1911, you have to depress a plate (the grip safety) on the back of the grip when you hold it for it to fire in addition to the normal manual safety.

One of the safeties on a firearm looks remarkably like a trigger. :p

He sounds like a sleaze from the shallow end of the gene pool. Probably for the best.

It would really suck if this guy were murdered and the killer got off with this story.

Well this explains why the gene pool look a little cleaner today. I guess I can't hold off on that chlorine until next Tuesday.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can half-cock the hammer on a 1911 (and probably others) which prevents the gun from firing until it is cocked the rest of the way. This feature was always described to me as a third "safety," though there may be another name for it.

I'd like to defend this guy, but what he did is plain stupid.

Luckily, not everyone in this town is that far down the gene pool.
