I've been running the Sunday morning shift here at the station for about a year and a half, and I have to say that these churches are really unoriginal in picking their music. They play the same 9 songs over and over and over again.

It seems like they are "preaching to the choir" ;). If they want to convert people, they need to modernize the whole thing. You won't win coverts by telling people how evil they are.

Sorry, just something I don't get.

Yeah, that seems to be how it is :)

Seriously though, how many times can you play records from the 30s that have been transfered so much that you can barely hear what they're saying because they are so staticy and overmodulated?

The songs are just... so boring.

My dad liked to listen to gospel music and he was not a Christian. He said it moved him.
I would go to my room and listen to music with headphones or go outside when he
put that stuff on.

Hell, you can not account for taste.

Well, gospel music is usually high powered and upbeat. The 40 black women in robes kind of thing.

This is 1930's country music with just one person singing almost monotone. Drives me freaking nuts.

Yeah, right. I'll have every elderly woman in the county yelling at me and telling me to go the hell back to California. I actually got that once for reading a news story from 5 miles outside of the city limits. About a girl dying. And being thrown into a river.

God I hate the elderly... ;)

lol...well, as long as you know that *all* Christian music isn't boring, we're cool. :p

Someone actually called to complain about a news story? That's pathetic..

I got reemed for that by her. She said that she saw the story on TV, therefore I didn't care about the community because if I did I wouldn't have ran it because everyone already knew about it. Cursing, screaming, I was trying not to laugh the entire time. Apparently a bean cook-off is more important than an FBI investigation. That's why I stepped down as News Director.

Now my boss's 72 year old wife is ND and she did a 1:45 story about the Pillsbury Doughboy dying from a yeast infection, a story about how evil Walmart is, a story about how much everyone loves Fox News, and a story about how happy she is that our news is up to 12 listeners.

Needless to say our Program Director and the advertisers aren't thrilled.

I digress though. Sunday is our big seller, so it makes sense to play music for the older folks, since they are our main listeners on Sunday mornings. I just wish they'd jazz it up a bit. We have one non-hokey CD that I play, since I only have control over what we air for a short period of time. I like it, it's up beat and happy.

Typically, "Christian music" doesn't refer to '30's records anymore. POD, Stephen Curtis Chapman, etc, check out some newer stuff if you're going to play anything.

How about Stryper... "To Hell With the Devil" was my favorite of theirs....

But when you say Christian music, I would think of Michael W Smith, Petra, Amy Grant... If you are talking about old church music, I wouldn't describe that as 'Christian' music.... That is old Gospel music maybe....

The problem with christian music is that it's too narrow. It's like having "suicide music" or "broken heart" music. Who wants to have every single song for the whole morning be about the same subject?

BTW, if you were from california, you'd probably be playing Jed the Fish's "out of order" thing or something like that on sunday morning, unless you were specifically a christian station.

Nah, we're a news/sports/talk station. We've got lots of Paul Harvey, Rush, Jim Bohannon, etc plus sports events and a morning show. We used to run ESPN Radio, but we dropped it in favor of the Joey Reynolds Show.

Yeah, I agree that the music is too narrow. The songs are not only about the same thing, but they all sound similar. Maybe I'll spice things up next week and play the Hymn of the Soviet Union instead of the National Anthem. Just to see how many calls I can get. :)
