Man charged with stealing cable

18 months for that? I know Comcast wants to make a strong point, but 18 months for such a petty crime seems like it's overdoing it.

sucks to be him.

When I moved into my first apartment last year, I plugged in the TV to the cable outlet just for kicks to see if I received a cable signal. Sure enough, I turn on the TV and I get all the channels. I saw those amnesty commercials Comcast put on and decided to not take any chances. It's just not worth it though. I unplugged it and just went ahead and ordered the service. I like TV and don't have problems paying $40 for it.

Comcast says cable theft costs local governments and municipalities millions of dollars in lost revenue annually and causes signal leakage that adversely affects signal quality and other communications systems, including those used by aircraft.
The National Cable Television Association estimates the cable industry loses nearly $6.6 billion in revenues each year to cable theft.

I hate statements like these. Honestly, stealing cable is going to down an airplane? blah blah blah....

They're insulting our intelligence now...

It seems to me that if they pass a signal into my home, I should be able to use it however I want.

If someone accidently parked their automobile on your property, you aren't legally allowed to keep the automobile...even if it's trespassing.

I can't get cable, but if they pipe it into your house, they are responsible for shutting it off. Just like the rest of the public utilities. You have to pay to have water, gas, electricity, and phone turned on. But they expect cable to be on the honor system?

If you don't want cable TV "piped into your dwelling", then it's your responsibility to remove all the offending coaxial cabling. You own the physical coaxial cable.

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

Leroy: all I'm saying is this: they should have the plug pulled UNTIL the service is started. Not assume everyone's going to go for it.

Folks, it's a crime to steal cable television. Your theological and moral arguments really don't amount to much in the face of written law.

The guy got caught stealing. And while I agree the punishment is a bit harsh, he was committing a crime.

Leaks in CATV systems have caused radio blackouts in Avionics and VHF voice COMS in the past. They take this very seriously.

Cheers!
