Except for the fact that almost every hotel in America has keypads or card readers on the outside of the building for this very purpose. They usually activate after a certain time and stay active all night, beginning anywhere from 10pm-midnight. Once you are inside the building, there should no need to restrict public areas like bathrooms. Dumb hotel is dumb.
This.
Keypads on the rear door exist in any hotel below 3 stars (so no night guardian).
During the day, there is the concierge who can keep the abusers out. Bathrooms are usually also not right by the main door to avoid people trying to come in stealthily to use the bathrooms. But the guides who are waiting for their clients etc should have the right to access the bathroom as well.
Super-retarded policy by the hotel.

It's also extremely retarded to put someone in prison for doing this because he just couldn't hold it anymore. It's not some madman who needs to be put in a cell until the men in white come pick him up. Seriuosly, he should just have been booked and released, if he actually did that on purpose.

Heh that policy ended with somebody shitting on their floor. They may want to rethink that policy.
One guys goes on the floor every few years, or some mentally ill homeless guy smears it all over the bathroom every few days.

More and more businesses are doing this. Yeah, it's just one more petty way to make life difficult for homeless people. But nobody cares. Especially the poor slobs who have to clean the mess.

if your bathrooms are so exposed that you can't stop the homeless from going in, make the bathrooms require coin insertion to unlock and keep fake coins in the reception for customers.

...how is that any different that telling the customers what the key code is?

Need to bring back the solid and reliable bathroom attendant. Always there to make sure your wiping needs are met.
