In europe they will convict him for that. A lot of europeans don't feel you should defend yourself if it means someone else comes to harm.

How did I know it was going to be Europe before I even clicked the link?

Not necessarily, if they found he acted in self-defence he would most probably get off. British law is similar to what is mentioned about Italian law in the link.Originally posted by: ShotgunSteve

I know they would convict him in the UK, not sure about Italy.

No, because several European countries, UK in particular, are infamous for convicting people even when it was clearly self-defense.Originally posted by: Lonyo

this is awesome. if this guy doesnt go free, italy needs to seriously reevaluate it's legal system.
something like this happened in the states last year. a carjacker tried to steal a minivan at a gas station. he told everyone to get out and had some sort of weapon. he didnt realize it was four judo instructors on the way to a demonstration. they ripped him a new one and were on every news report across the country. watching the police lead the guy to the cop car was sweet--he was in some intense pain.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I have heard LEO's state that once the assailants have been fought off and have left the building, the 'right' to use leathal force is no longer there. The rationale being, that they are leaving, let them go and file a report so the Law can pursue them. If you, a normal citizen pursue them and then kill them, you may be judged to have crossed the line. They ran, you stay in your house and be safe. You were no longer looking to be safe, you were looking to settle a score.
