Just found out today that Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - Ultimate came out this week on DVD and BR. Went to BB and they only had the BR version. I was POed cuz I had a bunch of 5$ off RZ coupons. Then I noticed the had 3 60GB PS3s there with a free controller and free Heavenly sword. I wanted the freaing movie so bad I almost bought the PS3! Then common sense kicked in and I just went across the street to B&N. But, BB has the fully compatible 60gb versions in stock.

Are there non-fully compatible versions of the PS3? All of 'em are BR players...

Glad common sense kicked in but honestly if you want something to watch BR's on the PS3 really is a decent deal...cheaper than alot of the stand alone players and from what I understand it's a pretty good player overall...

I agree, IF I was interested in BR. There are no PS3 games that interest me now. My 360 on the otherhand has tons of games I play. It is a good deal for the PS3 overall. BR players cost about the same plus you get all the other stuff and I have 100s of PS2 games, but with Christmas around the corner, I just couldnt justify it.

Too bad you came to your senses, 6x the pixels is what I'd want for a movie to keep. Aside from being a little louder than a dedicated player, (but nothing like a 360) the PS3 is one of the best blu-ray players and the most future-proof.

Blu-ray movies look very nice in 1080p on my 50" Samsung DLP. I just rent discs via netflix while the format war rages, and since if I want to watch something again a year later I can always just put it back in my netflix queue.

I'm tempted by the 360 HD-DVD player, but for movies a loud console plus mess of cables is less attractive to me than a standalone HD-DVD player. If Toshiba has any more inventory dumping events like the $99 A2 closeout I might get one.

My TV is SD. My PC LCD can only do 720P, my 360 looks great, but I am not ready for full HDTV, waiting a bit more for price reductions, better quality (laser TV, where are you?) and either a next gen DVD winner or an affordable hybrid.

I don't understand what the point of this post is...you almost spent $400 because you wanted to buy a movie?

Would have been more like 600, but yeah, thats the point of the thread. I love CEOTTK.

Are you saying you passed on upgrading to HD movies and owning a movie that apparently you love oh so very very much, in HD?

Way to go I guess?

You make money to spend it. Go for it! 🙂

Oh, and by the way, I saw some commercials for this new blu-ray set on Discovery HD Theater last week, and if the resulting movie quality is anything like what they showed, you'd be better off just sticking with DVD's. The transfer to "HD" wasn't kind to it.
