Man Aims to Dispel Ski Mask Fear
AP
WINSTED, Conn. (AP) - Bank robbers, terrorists and prowlers have given ski masks a bad name for years, but a Connecticut man is wearing them around town to prove that not everyone who dons one is plotting mayhem.

Kevin Lambert, 31, got the idea in 2005 after he walked out of a local package store and slipped on a ski mask for an impromptu photograph. A passer-by, fearing the store had been robbed, called police. Lambert was charged with breach of peace and had to perform 15 hours of community service.

Since then, he and his friends have worn ski masks in public places in an attempt to dispel the stereotype. Lambert has even launched a Web site dedicated to "Striving to keep America Warm By Combating Ski Mask Discrimination."

"This isn't something I do to go out and scare people," he said.

In some chilly circles, ski masks seem to be making a comeback. Tom Ramos, 16, said the three-hole knit masks are retro-chic in the snowboarding community of Naugatuck.

On the slopes, sure. But in a bank?

"It's a little out of place," Ramos acknowledged.

A ski mask is great for keeping your face somewhat warm. I don't know how people in cold places walk around in heavy coats, but then their face and neck uncovered.

What about the poor unfortunate souls that have to wear pantyhose over their face to a bank. This discrimination must end.

I was called "The friendly Walmart terrorist" when I would wear my ski mask - I had to wear one when I'd use the forklift outside. Driving that thing around would make for a nasty wind chill which was murder on my face. Someone said I just needed an Uzi or an AK-47 on my back to complete the look.

Exactly. I'm going to college in Erie, PA. It gets quite cold here, and it is always windy. Wind chills were in the negative teens recently. (I know, people in the Dakotas, Canada, or farther north, it's nothing, but it's still cold.) If you don't want to get frostbite while walking across the ridiculously sprawled-out campus, you'd best keep any skin covered up. I have seen a few people in ski masks, and I never really expected them to suddenly start gunning down anyone, robbing someone, or beheading people at random.

I had to wear a Ski Mask when I went outside most of last week in Boston it was so friggin cold. Of course when I did go to the Convenience Store or Liquor Store I made sure I took it off first, I didn't want to get shot by some jumpy Foriegner manning the cash register.

I wear a full face mask designed to cut out wind when I ride in colder conditions like in the morning to work and nights home. I haven't gotten a weird look yet I wouldn't already get walking into an office highrise in motorcycle leathers/overpants helmet, gloves and riding boots.

That dude is awesome. I've had this idea before, but not to the level that he has taken it. I'll start wearing one next winter.

I don't understand, I thought you love this kind of abuse by government?

Please show me one post that could EVER give someone that kind of idea. Just one, Dave.

There is ONE common theme among all my issue posts, Dave: Freedom for those who do no physical or financial harm to others.

While you're at it, Google "libertarian" and find me one self described libertarian who thinks ski masks worn in public should be a crime.
