(As posted in the #General Hardware forum)

Hey, I have the Audigy 2 and was thinking about making a headphone-out connector for it.

Obviously, the board does not have one as-is, and I think that the IDE-looking connector for the Live Drive can be wired to provide a headphone-out. I am sure the Live Drive does not do any signal processing when providing a headphone out; it probably simply re-routs the signal from a couple of pins: from the board's Live Drive output "IDE" header to the "IDE cable" to the Live Drive's "IDE" input to the headphone port on the front of the Live Drive.

Do you think this might work? I just don't want to short-circuit the thing.

Do you have any idea which pins of the Live Drive are used to for the headphones? Would someone be kind enough to do some research? :) Hey, you could become rich by selling a little IDE-to-headphone connector for 5 bucks!!! :p

Thanks in advance, fellow geeks :)

dunno about which pins are for what on the Audigy 2,
but just for your reference, the internal breakout box isnt called the live! drive on the Audigy Series, its called the Audigy drive(and Audigy drive2 on Audigy2)

The Live/Audigy drive outputs on the card are completely digital (SPDIF format to be exact). The breakout box contains the hardware to handle the D/A conversions. There are no analog inputs or outputs on that header.

All of this makes adding headphones a bit difficult. You would have to build a small circuit to convert the SPDIF signals to analog.

The cheapest and easyist thing to do, would be to make a simple switch, that can be mounted where convienient. You can probably buy them if you look around.
To switch between the headphones and the speakers, to save you doing it manually. And then, when you want to switch to headphone (or vice-versa) just flick the switch and set the Audigy Software to headphones.

Thanks for all your feedback, guys.

I have concluded that it is too complicated, and exchanged the regular Audigy 2 for the Platinum model. Hey, I'll just eat less pie in the next few days :)
