Making the Truepower 430 quieter

When I first got my Truepower I thought it was wonderful. Compared to my Smartpower it was inaudible. Now after a month with it, although it hasn't gotten any louder, it is now too loud for my taste. I think I have just become obsessed with making my computer silent.

My idea is to swap out the fans in the Truepower with Panaflos. I was thinking a 92mm L1A (42.7cfm, 27db) and a 80mm L1A (24cfm, 21db) or H1A (32cfm, 39db). Do these fans consistenly start at the 5V initial fan speed of the truepower? According to this article at Overclockers.com the 80mm fan in the truepower puts out 28cfm and the 92mm puts out 38cfm. Would the 80mm Pan L1A be adequate to cool this? The article mentions the 92mm fan overpowering the 80 and making extra noise and loosing effeciency. If I were to use the H1A and L1A combo, then the fans would be about equal performance and similar loudness. This combo would be more powerful than stock, but would it be quieter? Are there fans that would be better for this?

Is there anyone here who has modded their truepower? If so, please post your results.

Thanks,
Brian

Thanks for the page. I found some good advice there. Still not sure what I am going to do yet. I guess it really depends on how risky I want to be. Does anyone here know if the fans I mentioned earlier will all start up at 5V?

Thanks,
Brian

Some people just don't use the 92mm fan on the antec truepower 430. Sometime back I had an antec 330 smart fan PSU. Put a L1A in there, it was quiet but I did worry about how efficient the cooling was. You could disable the 92mm and replace the 80mm with an l1a and it would be really quiet.

I just got the trupower 430 and I totally agree it's fairly loud. I have 2 quietpc psus but they are only 300W but were very very expensive.

I'm not sure how much hotter the true430 gets compared to my smartblue 350, but I just took the inner fan out of mine.
It doesn't exhaust hotter air, and just by looking at the design I would think the inner fan does more to disturb airflow than encourage it.
I'd just switch out the 80mm and see how hot the exhaust air gets. Thats what I did. I replaced the stock fan with a rheobussed zalman zm-f1.

Thanks for all the help. I think I am going to remove the 92mm fan and swap the 80mm fan with a Panaflo H1A. First though I want to measure the temperatures in there to see how hot it gets before and after I swap the fans and how much the 92mm fan really helps. I am going away for spring break now, but I will post my results in a few weeks when I finally get to this.

Thanks,
Brian

Almost every 80mm and 92mm L1A that I've ever used (a bunch) will start at 5V, all will start at 7V. Note: "almost", there is an occaisional one that doesn't start at 5V. It's the luck of the draw, kinda like OC'ing a CPU.

I modded two Enermax's with L1A's and in both cases removed the 92mm entirely. I got the same or slightly lower case temps. I think the two fans just create turbulence.
