making sure: 52C isn't too hot for a p4 right?

I'm not really up on intel stuff since I haven't used an intel chip in my home comps since 486DX (nothing against intel though...I'm going to buy a dell for my next comp anyway)

but my friend's comp is having trouble, so is 52C too hot? it of course isn't for athlons, but I thought p4's might be a different situation

Depends on which motherboard you are using.....if you are using an IC7....it reports anywhere from 5C-15C high (i.e. ~5C at idle, ~10-15C at load), whereas an Asus P4C800 actually under-temps about 1C. From every study I've read the Abit actually runs 1C cooler than the Asus, but reports ALOT higher. Temp. is such a relative number, you need to find someone with your setup and compare temps.

It's not the best, unless you are OCing, but jhurst brings up a good point. What's your specs?

Now that summer is here, my P4C runs @ 50-52C idle, 62-64C load. This is with most of my fans off or @ 7v, however. No stability problems here!

Well at higher temps its not a stability issue.....its a longevity issue. Heat kills processors, much like smoking causes death. Some processors will be able to handle the heat for many years.....some will die early. Some ppl can smoke for 80 yrs. ....some die at age 40.

52C is fine. Processors are designed to handle temps much higher than that.

A lot of misinformation going on around here. People started shooting for sub-50 temps so they could get higher overclocks, and now it has morphed into the techno-legend that you need sub-50 for stability or longevity. Just not true.

52C is probably too hot if you mean idle temps. I had a 2.4 533 and it idled around 38-40C and never hit above 46C or so on the stock cooler. Give us some more details about your system.

it depends on ambient temps also . . . my Summer "room temperature" is often over 90F . . . in my case - 52C is "fine" for load or (even) idle (2.80c @3.2ghz - i back off on the o/c in Summer). ;)

Geez, man, get some air conditioning or a swamp cooler or something. 90 degrees in your room? This is 2004, we can do something about that now!
