Making rechargeable battery pack for external HDD...?

Can anyone make some recommendations for a quick and hopefully simple project?

I need to supply DC power to a Datafab Firewire 2.5" HDD enclosure in the form of rechargeable batteries. The power requirement stated is 5v @ 1A.

What kind of/how many rechargeable batteries should I use? I'm looking for endurance matching a laptop battery - 2 hours or thereabouts. And how should I construct a voltage regulator, which I will presumably need? Can anyone draw up a quick list of stuff I will need to buy?

Many thanks!

well rechargeable nicads and nimh batteries are 1.2 volts. you can put 4 of them wired in series i think and get 4.8 volts . and mod up one of those generic ac adapter plugs to connect to this thing.

if you used 8 cells, wired in series in parallel with 1600maH batteries, then you'd have like one big 4.8 volt 3200mah battery. your drive uses 5 volts 1 Mah , so it should last around 3 hours. these cells are basically the same ones they use on normal laptops i think, like if you cut open an older lapotp battery they even have normal cells in there.
