Making profit while using school connection?

Mr Bob

Golden Member
My college has a clause in their AUP that says you are not allowed to profit from the internet connection.

Every computer has to register its MAC address before it can become active on the network. So I would assume that everything is being tracked.

Any suggestions for what I can do? I plan to make profit while going to school, because my job is all online stuff, yet the school doesn't allow it...

Yeah, you can STFU. If you're going to be making such a great profit, then move off campus, pay for your own internet connection and don't abuse the school's resources.

they dont want you running a web server. They won't care about anything else or tele-commuting. If you think they're going to monitor every packet you're nuts.

i believe that applies to people who want to monopolize the school's resources for their personal use (like web hosting)

if you are an ebay powerseller, it really wont apply

What online stuff? If its just surfing and web development, no school cares about that. The probably care if you run a server or a p2p program.

Essentially, it's up to your school. They have a rule that you can't use it for profit - so it would be unwise to use it for work. Either you need to find another job, or pay for a domestic broadband installation.

Different places have different policies. I worked briefly at one place - during the induction the IT manager told us, that the equipment may not be used for profit. They then went on to give an example of one employee who had just received a formal written caution because they had logged on to eBay and listed their car for sale.

actually we do. Most of the good ones anyway track and log every single connection.

Why don't you go explain your situation and see what they say? Worst they could say is no, but chances are if you're doing something legit and not bandwidth intensive, they won't mind.

if you run a website that is gosted someplace else then they dont care, they also dont care about useing ebay, they just dont want you running a site of your computer using teh schools connection like others have said

These people are probably right, that if it isn't bandwith intensive they won't care. However, you should still ask. Just because we think its probably ok doesn't mean it actually is.

wtf kind of equipment do you use to do that? I have worked at almost every concievable level of management in educational internet service providing and anything more than top level (from an individual school's perspective) packet shaping and firewalling is simply lunacy.

There is a difference between using the connection to profit directly (ie, running a web server) and indirectly (checking your work email). I would assume that any indirect activity is perfectly fine, especially since you don't have a choice of ISPs while at school (usually). If worst comes to worst, you can always go the SSH tunneling route 😉

Pix firewalls, Packeteer shapers and gigabit speed intrusion detection systems.

All connections (for examble a new source/destination conversation) are logged to a central host with 1000s of gigs of storage. Backed up every night and erased monthly. You can even gleen the logs so to speak and run pattern recognition on them.

Most of this communication /logging is run on a management network (sheer volume) and not in-line with the transport net. fun stuff.

You will be indebted to your school forever, any knowledge you learned from using the school network will become its property. Expect to see a bill for 60% of your paycheck in the future.

- Hmm, i read STFU and stopped reading the rest. +1 post for you, great job!!

" they dont want you running a web server."
- Well I won't be running a web server, but I will access my colo using the school's connection.. I am afraid to ask the techs, because I wouldn't want them to put me on a list to double check.

The AUP says "University facilities or properties may not be used for personal profit." which to me means, I cannot use it to profit.

Or does it mean I cannot sell the connection such as by providing a p2p network?
