Roxio WinOnCD 5 will perform this function - as well as many others.

I was thinking about this particular solution for viewing digital photographs also :)

If you want a good entry for a search engine check, try "Photo VCD"

I shall be checking out WinOnCD 5 later - I'll let you know how well it works :)

I like Roxio's slide show maker in ECDC 5 - it lets you use MP3 music files in background. That's very cool.

A new program from Jasc is now out and it is about as good and easier to set up - called AfterShot.

Does the Roxio slide show maker allow you to play back on a DVD/VCD player though?

I was attempting to make a Photo VCD on WinOnCD last night but kept getting an error. I eventually realised this was due to not having the software updated, by which time I was ready for bed ;)

Will try to make a Photo VCD tonight - after I help my buddy move into his new apartment........what fun...third floor - no lift... ;)

OK - I assume by DVD/VCD player you mean the non-computer player? If so, - no. I don't know of any computer created slide show program that will do that. As an alternative, consider connecting your computer to a large TV.

Yes talking about a standalone DVD/VCD player here. You can make slideshows very easily as you mentioned with EZCD 5 - I have that on my system already. I'm looking for a solution for sending disks to friends who will watch the show on their DVD (standalone) players.

Of course with Win ME/XP you can just do slideshows of images anyway using the slideshow function in the "My Pictures" folder if using a PC to view images.

I'm using Ulead DVD Pictureshow and it's a no brainer.
Is this for making Photo VCD's for standalone DVD/VCD players or just to make a slideshow to play on a PC?

If it is for a DVD/VCD player (as opposed to PC) how well does it work - do you advance the "tracks" (pics) by using the forward button etc? Or is it simply on a time delay where it automatically changes the image?

This is a great way to share your pics and bore people senseless :D

Take a look at all these FAQs on DVD compatibilities. Looks to me like one would need to get into the mysterious world of DVD-R, DVD-RAM, or DVD-RW to produce a disk with content that could do a slide show. DVD Then the software would have to perform in a streaming mode with no controls for the viewer - but just let a sequence of slides play as if they were streaming video.

The ULead Pictureshow software does indicate that it can produce slide show disks that are compatible with some home DVD players. They are listed.

That DVD FAQ site was quite interesting, certainly a lot of information on offer there. Most of my digital video experience has been in SE Asia where things were nearly always compatible with any type of disk or format (including region code) :D

I'm mainly looking at sending disks to friends/family back in the UK or Hong Kong, so I'll be using PAL format. The DVD player (Samsung DVD 909K) that my mother has in the UK is from HK, so it plays anything you throw at it generally.

Well I made a test "Photo VCD" disk last night and used Power DVD on my PC to Play it back. (Putting the disk in my DVD drive automatically loaded this program - I guess that is a good sign?) The "slideshow" played back on a time delay and advanced image by image automatically - or "streaming" as you mentioned.
I need to make up an NTSC disc and test it out on a standalone DVD (US version) here to see just how well it works though.

It is amazing the price of DVD players here in the US nowadays - just a pity they are all NTSC/110v :(

Virtually all A/V electronics in Hong Kong were multi-system and dual voltage - not to mention that most of the region codes are also removed when you purchase them also.

The region code issue was a stupid idea anyway - the pirates just make "region-free" DVD disks to play on players anyway :D

I know that this was not the original intention of the coding, but, if they really thought people should not be able to watch a movie on DVD until after the screen release of the movie, then they know nothing of the viewing habits of SE Asia and the fact that most Hollywood Movies are out on Pirate DVD/VCD long before the region 1 disk is available anyway :D

I am using the same program as well, and it works great!

It is for making photo VCDs that play on standalone DVD/VCD players... When the VCD is first played, it will show a main screen containing different albums... You use your number buttons to choose which album you wanna view, and the pictures in that album gets displayed in a time delay format (so no forward button required)... when you create the VCD you can choose the time delay in secs before it goes to the next picture...

For each album, you can also put in background music from wav, mp3, etc... so it's not as boring...

If you have a DVD burner this program can also create DVDs... although I havent tried it yet since I only have a CD burner...

I create photo VCDs for my friends and parents to view, since they dont want to sit in front of a computer to view all 200 pics from my trip :D

OK - here's a sequel to "all of the above." :)

This afternoon I ought and downloaded ULead DVDPictureshow for $29.95. A bargain!

Anyway, I created a CDR or "VCD" with a test slide show. It works! I played the product on my Pioneer DVD 525 player connected in the living room to a Sony 32-in XBR TV (venerable, but good.)

The music did not play. But - no biggie. That is probably a limitation or bad setting on my part because my sound there is complex with a Bose Lifestyle 25 system. Anyway - it does present a slide show on one's TV set.

But - more in may family have computers than living room DVD players. :)

Here are my assessments of some negatives:

1. No interesting and fancy slide transition effects. All simple shanges.
2. The slide show is limited to 99 slides. Some of my "days" are over 100. It requires considerable editing before hand.

On balance - it is good and worth having as a capability. I will continue to produce my computer driven CDR slide shows for my family, and this will be good when more of them get DVD players.

OK then here we go from my very limited perspective of using both programs.

WinOnCD 5:
Much bigger, more complex program with many more options than Ulead
Superior image playback quality.

Ulead DVD Pictureshow:
Small compact program
Easy to use, simple effective interface - poor image quality on playback.

I'm not sure if I have something wrong with the settings on the Ulead program or not yet - the image quality of the finished Ulead "VCD" was severly lacking compared to playback of the WinOnCD "VCD"

Further experimenting will be necessary ;)

As Arnie says, "Ah'll be back!"

OK - is WinOnCD only available through Roxio in Deutschland? I don't find it at all as a product in USA. Did a Google search and it came up with all Euro sites and languages.

If you do source WinOnCD 5 remember you will need to update the program - save an hour or so of frustration ;)
