making normal 5:4 aspect ratio lcd widescreen

my brother just picked up a samsung 912N lcd and its mine to use for a couple weeks. It seems to support wide screen ratios like 1280x768 and 1280x720, but they display full screen. There are no geometry controls that I can find to fix the aspect ratio. Anything else I can try. I really just want to be able to play half life 2 in widescreen.
