Hello all, I think I have it down for once. I am selling my OEM mobo+CPU+case but not HDD. I am replacing the CPU+mobo. I know this needs a new windows installation. However, since I will still be using the OEM windows code I want to know how to prep my machine for the new install. It will still be a 64 bit intel platform, but I plan to move to either z87 or z97 from my current h55.

The steps I have for now are
Get a .iso on a flashdrive
Get code off of OEM case
Move everything
Get new cpu+mobo, install
On boot I should boot into the flashdrive
Run install, enter code
Profit
Overclock. >:D

Thanks!

:/ I hate backing up stuff. Got a 500GB USB 2.0 external HDD and one 1.5TB 5400rpm drive with 600GB on it. XF
What do you guys recommend for a backup? I just want to get my games over and restore them to exactly where they were, not bother with the near 200GB of extra I have.

Also, how should I wipe it? Last time windows just chose to reinstall over itself even though I choose a new install.

Don't have another one. All the other computers in my house are macs. I'm the only one that tinkers. (I also really kinda need to disassemble it by later today)

To be clear; I do have most "critical" files backed up but I wanted to make an image of some folders without needing to manually copy another 100+ locations. (I really should organize better)

That is not in accordance with the license agreement. You cannot MOVE Windows from an OEM PC to another PC it is by license tied to the original motherboard.

I had the idea that a license is transferable as long as it is still your PC and the same version of windows. Not multiple pc's at a time either, but I mean like it is a physical copy of windows. When using a disk you can use it on any one PC at a time.

Not on OEM. An OEM copy of Windows license is permanently tied to the motherboard it is first installed on.

Windows 7 OEM and Windows 8 OEM may refuse to activate if a different motherboard is detected at activation to what is recorded on MS servers. There is an exception, where an OEM copy of windows can be reused on a new motherboard, if it is a warranty replacement. An official system builder will be able to call MS licensing support and get the activation block lifted. However, if it has been a long while since your copy of windows is activated, the same serial may activate it on a new motherboard (even if this is not permitted according to the license).
