Making network cables

Hey everyone, just found this forum a few days ago, looks like a very useful resource.

Anyway, I need some help. I'm trying to make my own network cables, but this just seems overely difficult, so I figure I must be doing something wrong. I have a crimper, but getting the wires in the right places is the problem. Does anyone know any easy way to get this done? Do I just have the wrong tool for the job/

Thanks!

Try this:

1. Cut about 1/2" of insulation from the cable.
2. Line up the wires in the order you want. Make them nice and flat and tightly ordered.
3. Now cut all 8 wires in one snip so you have a flat cut all the way accross.
4. Jam the connector on the wires. Keep pushing until you can see 8 little copper circles when looking directly into the connector from the front.
5. Crimp.

it's definitely a "learned" thing

i find doing what Rickr says is a good idea. once you have all them ordered up and about 1/2 inch of insulation gone, "bend" the wires a few times and get them nice and lined up...then "shove" 'em in the jack.

practicallynetworked has a few guides about doing this if you look through the webpage...might help a bit

It's definitely a learned/practiced art.

I personally strip more like 1 1/2" of insulation, so it's easier to line up the wires. Then cut.

Thanks guys, appreciate the tips.

I'll have another go at it tomorrow, would hate to have to go pay a fortune for premade cables. 😉
