Making my HP4M a network printer on my LAN

Muse

Lifer
Do I need a driver?

Right now the printer is connected via parallel port to one of my desktops. I have two desktops and an ethernet router. I figure I will put the Jetdirect J2550-60003 card in the printer and connect it via Cat5 cable to one of the jacks on the router. The router is a D-Link 704p, which I bought partly because it was supposed to support connecting a printer as a network printer, but it turned out that it didn't support the HP4M! 🙁

My desktops see each other nicely because they both have Zonealarm free 4.5 installed and configured to see each other in the trusted zone.

I just got a new Thinkpad T60 and am trying to get all the machines to see each other... so far, not successfully. I will get a wireless g router eventually (recommendations?), but for the time being, I want to get everything working on ethernet. Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc.

Comment: It is so weird looking back up at my 19" LCD (desktop's monitor) after looking at the 14.1" screen of the laptop. The 19" suddenly looks huge!

plug in a network cable to prinserver card
reboot
go into test menu and print a configuration page
there is a block in the middle of it specifying the jetdirect tcp/ip settings
note that the card indeed function. If not, it will say status 'not ready' or not appear at all
use the interface buttons on the printer to set the printer up with the gateway subnet mask and iP settings
make sure to go all the way through and apply the esttings till you get out of the tcp/ip menu
reboot printer
No additional driver is needed for lj4 in 2k or xp.
create a tcp/ip port when adding the printer.
pick the printer from the dropdown menu

could also just set the printer to dhcp with a hostname. in your tcp/ip port, print to the hostname so even if the ip changes you can still print. the above is pretty much spot on.
