I would like to be able to make long distance calls using my cabel modem connection. Optimally I would like to have a cordless phone that I could use just like my regular phone that would make online calls. Does anything like this exist? If so, what is it and where do I get it? Thanks

There used to be a fantastic company that offered free worldwide calls from any country to any of (I think up to) 25 countries that supported the plan, they installed a client on your computer, you would choose a country and dial the number, the calls were crystal clear and they would go through your sound card, but typical of everything that is great on the internet it became pay only, the website was/is www.hottelephone.com

I'd like to know if there are any others that are free too

Cheers

I don't know if there is any way to rig it to work through an actual phone, but www.dialpad.com will allow you to make calls within the US using your soundcard (speakers to hear, mic to talk)

could always get some voice over ip solution ... a house full of guys sprung for a t1 and got it through http://www.vanion.com, and then got the optional VoIP; it uses up 16k of their bandwidth for each line they desire to use. I've used it, and it works great -- very very clear, no lag or anything.

so, if you have a couple grand, get a t1 w/ voip :)

I think Net2Phone allows long distance calls also. I don't know about international though.
