making images transparent in premiere

I have a video clip that i want running in the background as images i've created come and go on top of it. How do i do this? I need to make the background of the image transparent (the transparent parts are all white) and how do i get the graphics to appear and disappear will cool effects. I've tried reading thier tutorial....got no where. tried searching online for stuff, cant find anything....

help would be greatly appreciated
