Making/editing graphics through the web

I am sure most of you have seen websites that allow you to creat your own buttons by supplying text and changing the features of the button(like shadow, border, and etc.)

What i am wondering is how in the hell do they do that?

I want to do something like that. Like suppose, i want to allow users to enter in text and on submitting, whatever happens, i want the text to be part of the image.

How could I do that, any advice would be helpful. thanks so much

I believe windows imaging accepts command line arguments, so you might be able to interface it with a cgi script. Dunno exactly how. But look into windows imaging.
If not, maybe you can do same thing with GIMP on linux. not sure.
