I'm making chicken marsala for the first time. Can I substitute oregano for basil since I got no oregano but I have basil?

Basil is sweeter than oregano but they are both green leaves so go for it. I think at worst it would be barely noticeable.

fresh or dried? You'll probably want to use twice as much basil as the oregano is quite strong.

Thanks guys. The basil is dried. I think I may use 1.5x the basil since I personally think oregano is too strong of a spice.

you're substituting basil for oregano, not the other way around.

anyway, they don't taste the same, but leaving out oregano isn't quite as noticeable as leaving out basil.

I'd go to the store, you don't want to mess with a recipe the first time you try it or you'll won't know if its good or not

I don't think so, but the best part of cooking is improvization (although this absolutely does not work with baking unless you know much of the theory behind it).

But you can make hamburgers from ground beef.
