Say you have some idea you thought about and would like to make it real I mean like an invention. Should you go to someone about it or patent it first, or get one made and then invest on your own to start to sell it.

I have this idea of a family product, nothing huge but something you might see in the ?As seen on TV? stuff or sold in retail stores.

Anyone done this before or maybe has idea but also don?t know how to start.

i've heard it takes thousands of dollars to get an idea patented.

and as long as you can put it in writing and be able to prove that you were the first person to think of it-- you should be able to talk about it with some kind of patent pending notice without fear of somebody stealing your idea. not sure how that actually works though.

yeah good luck with that.

They have companies like Invention Submission Corporation (search that) which assists you. Maybe in exchange for your idea, they'll manufacture it at their cost and give you a cut of it. Not sure, but it's better than spending thousands upon thousands yourself.

depends...is it something easy to copy? Because if it's hard/impossible to copy exactly (recipe for Coca Cola), you might have better luck not patenting it.

Its like the ribbon magnets stickers, anyone could have come up with it and anyone could I guess make a variation of the product.

You can no longer patent it. IF you tell anyone about it without first at least having a patent pending then it is free to the world, it can never be patented. Always go to a lawyer, the little $$ spent on them could be $$$$$$$$$$$ in your pocket. Your gamble, we chose to go to a lawyer first. :)
