Making an extension for a network cable

I got a network cable running across a building, it's a bit short. I don't want to run a whole new cable and was thinking using some couplers to extend the length of the cable, is this a good idea? or will there be degradation and loss of performance?
 
In general couplers are a bad idea. Loose twists, signal strength degrades, etc. How long is your cable?
