making a usb stick AWESOME

My university's computers struggle, and only have basic IE installed with the bare minimum of programs, and no network drives for students, so....

I'm wondering if its possible to use the usb stick they gave us (256mb) to load up on apps and stuff that would run off the stick rather than the hard disk, and not need registry entries or something

so far what i'd want for convenience

-firefox
-thunderbird
-trillian/some chat program
-xchat

or an equivalent, just so I can get functionality. Firefox is the big one because I <3 cookies and bookmarks.

ALSO, would it be possible to password protect the stick on insert so only I could access it? I was thinking put it in an encrypted zip but not every computer is XP or has winzip.
