Hi All.

Just got a USB Caonn printer. It will be placed behind me in the room, but to hook it up without wires on the floor, I will need to get a cable of about 35 ft in length and snake it around the baseboard. But USB cables top out at 15' (I think?). Can I get a Ethernet > USB adapter? This way I could use a CAT5 cable from my router to the USB> to the printer.

Anyone ever done this before? What aould be great is links! I tried looking but couldn't find a guide on tring to do this. One option I'd like to avoid is getting a Wireless USB print server. Too expensive.

Thanks!!

uh, it doesnt work like that.

usb-cat5 is just to increase the length at which the signal can travel, it's not for actually making it a network signal.

if you want to do that, then buy a print server that's USB capable.

We have some usb -> cat5 -> usb cables at work. Can't recall the manufacturer but they work great.

Here are the ones we have.

The USB on the printer is a Client USB the only thing that you can plug in is a USB server type.

http://www.ezlan.net/prtserver.html

USB have two configurations.

The master side that is on the computer, this side needs the computer's CPU, Memory, etc. to function.

The computer's master side is identified by the large Type A plug.

The Client side.
It has very simple interface with very few active components.

The client side is installed in Cameras, USB HDs, Mice, Keyboards, and any other USB device that can be plugged to a computer.

This side is identified by the small Type B plug (there are few versions sizes of the plugs on the client side).

A Stand alone USB Device (like Pinter Server) that can function with is own Master side needs a special hardware/firmware circuitry that emulate the specific need of the device from the CPU/memory etc.

As an example when you have a USB printer you cannot use a simple USB Wireless card to make the printer Wireless since the USB Wireless card needs to be plugged into a Computer circuitry to be functional (I.e. to plug type A), the printer per-se would Not provide to the Client USB the computer's functions.

If you want a USB printer to be Wireless you have to buy a USB Wireless server, this server is a combo of USB Wireless card and an emulation of the computer side for the Wireless aspects.

Similarly are other types of stand alone USB master devices, they are built with a specific circuitry for specific emulation.
