tstrike

Senior member
getting a new system for x-mas
any suggestion or changes for best performance??
thanks

P4 2.66
Swiftech mcx4000 with thermaltake smartfan 2 for 75cfm
Asus P4PE\L
1gb (2sticks) XMS512-3200c2
WD 120gb 8mb
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
TTGI 420W Triple fan powersupply
Dual 21" Monitor
etc etc...

Looks very nice, the SLK800 would probably perform better than the Swiftech though. Then again I'm a Swiftech fanboy and their products are generally good.

actually swiftech mcx4000 is an excellent heatsink
paired wtih the fan it would be really nice

anyways now the system critique:

i see you are getting 2 sticks of ram, perhaps wait for granite bay so you can take advantage of dual channel ddr?
how does the p4 2.66 oc? im pretty sure all 2.66 nowadays are going to be C1 stepping (if there was even a B0 stepping) so it should be fairly good from my guesstimate, however if you plan to overclock (which i hope you do with that heatsink+fan) maybe look into the success/failures others have had with the same cpu. If there seems to be more failure than success (your definition of each term may differ from mine however in terms of overclocked speed attained) i would look into a 2.4b C1 or especially a 1.8a C1 stepping

other than that seems good, nice xmas system 🙂

Looks good... Although I'm not sure why you want to subject your hearing to all those fans.

And what are you going to do for soundcard and speakers?

i am planning to overclock =)
well since i do alot of 3d rendering i figure 1 gb of ddr400 would suit me well
well want something to hit over 3ghz so decided on 2.66 whihc i think all 2.66 are c1
althought now looking into mroe c1 chips and starting to like the 2.4b c1 since i can hit a higer fsb

Wingznut:
gonna use my old soundblaster live 5.1 plaitnum and
bought the Yamaha Tss1 5.1 speakers which is so far awesome speakers

All 2.66 CPUs are guaranteed to be of C1 stepping. Right now 2.4 C1s are a rarity, most of them being from dell computers....

Why not look into watercooling if you plan to overclock?
