Making a movie into an Ipod video

I don't know where to begin, I started searching and couldn't find anything free. I got a virus from one kind of download that is supposed to do what I wanted, make a movie into an ipod format.

I downloaded a trial version of Clone DVD Mobile. That is a problem too; I got an .avi movie file on my computer but this program won't recognize it. It is looking for something along the lines of VOB/IFO files. I have no idea what those are for one and two I have no idea how I could convert my .avi movie file into one of those (because obviously it will never be detected within this program so it's best said to make the movie into another kind of file, or at least I believe so).

I assume you are on windows?

I hear good things about Videora, but others may be able to chime in. My laptop is about twice as fast as my desktop when it comes to conversion, so I do all that in OS X so that is all I am really up on right now. Maybe if I ever get a new desktop I will get back into the scene, but I doubt it.

MPEGStreamClip ( http://www.squared5.com/ ) is good.

Handbrake ( http://handbrake.fr/ ) isn't bad in Windows, but it's not as good as the OS X version.

Other than that, I'm not really sure of any other free software to do what you're looking to do.
