Making a internal HD and CDR become external

I would like to hook up my notebook with an external HD and CDR via converting ones that I now use internally on my desktop. I am not sure if a USB connection kit to make internal devices external would be fast enough. I am just worried about the transfer rate. I have an 8x cdr, and I don't know if an external casing attached by USB would be fast enough to support data transfer at 8x. Thanx.

USB = 1.2 Megabytes per second

That is pretty slow for a hardrive or CDR. I don't know if there are any kits readily available, but I did see one a while back on some website. It however was for either laptop hardrives or 3.5" drives, not 5-1/4".

You can get the SCSI external enclosure and and a PCMIA SCSI cards but it'll be pretty pricey by the time you're all done.
