making a google search more 'personal'...

This may not be the right place for this idea/question. Please refer me to the right place if so.

The issue has to do with all the crap (old documents, software, pictures, music) that accumulates on our personal storage. Sometimes I find it easier to google for a solution than to go through all the crap I already have(even though I may have solved the problem -whatever it is-and forgotten it). Is there a way to google search an index of our hard drives?

For example, I want to find a piece of software to eliminate duplicate files from my hard drive. I google for this and get a thousand hits including things like 'tidy up software', 'easy duplicate file finder', 'duplicate file cleaner', etc, etc, along with a bunch of random ads, as well as text articles - 'How to find duplicate files', etc.etc. I may already have this software somewhere on my hard drive space. If I had a google index of my hard drive space, a google search of my local index should return a subset of the same search applied to the internet-it would save bandwidth, and solve my problem.
