Asus A7N8X, so I get all of the higher multipliers unlocked if I can make it think this is a faster chip...

Blowing/cutting the 5th L3 bridge seems to be the verdict... has anyone done this yet?

Agree with KF = Yes, but also depends on your mobo. Just opening the 5th L3 resets your CPU to a Mobile's 3X battery saving Power Now setting, (special case), which desktops might not boot. Might have to get into bios asap to reset to legal Multiplier, or might even need add'l mod/s. Depends on mobo. If you want to be prepared/knowledgable, just in case....

Hmm, okay, so having a new nforce2 board, if I open the 5th L3 and it doesn't like that, I should be able to open appropriate bridges and turn this into a XP2600+ or something like that, correct?

No need as on the T-bred when you use the Pin trick it enables all the mults

so i have a 1700+ b, and anytime i try to set the multiplier to 12, my system won't boot, is this cause its locked? i can underclock the multiplier though. :-/ i have a7n8x deluxe and in the bois, i have the options for all the multipliers, but do i stll need to physical unlock the cpu?

Save the "hard mods" for last...if necessary. First try to get into the bios "asap" on 2nd boot IF 1st boot fails...before it hangs again. Then set say 13X in the bios IF the user-defined option is available....see what happens. And hard modding bridges is not recommended as user must recut/reclose bridges for every trial setting, can really screw up your CPU. Consider soldering switched wires to back of socket. Read the article, then try approaches which seem easiest for you...IF necessary.

Tbreds are all unlocked, ie, their L1 bridges are all closed. Your experience is strange as resetting a default Multiplier in the 5X-12.5X range, ( 1700 = 11X), to another setting in that low range should be no problem. Suggests your system, ?bios?, may be having a negative interaction with the Northbridge which sets system timings as function of System Clock and Multiplier.

Old Duron/Tbirds used to not boot if Multiplier was raised but not the FID Multiplier "ID" settings to the Northbridge. This reminds us of that experience. A few of us are struggling to understand issues like yours.
