Making a 12V fan use 5V

I got some 120 MM fans in my case and they're kind of loud. Is it safe for the fan and powersupply to switch the leads so it's getting power from the 5V instead of 12V on a molex connector?

5V is fine, but 7V might mess with your PSU depending on how much current you draw from the 5V line.

Perfectly safe, although some fans may not reliably start spinning at 5 V.
