Makes me angry that Sega never ports their games to the PC.

I had Sonic Heroes for the PC.
I actually just bought the european version (I don't believe there was a U.S. release) of it recently, sealed, off of ebay. It's certainly the best version (other than the audio bit rate is probably higher on the Xbox and PS2 versions), because it looks and works great with nvCP AF and nvCP AA.

Anyway, as a few other posters said, I'll probably be able to play Sonic Generations on the PC in 5-10 years.

As for piracy, Steam has their stuff locked up pretty tight, and I think that's why they've been so successful, so piracy can't be a reason.

Sega still makes arcade games for arcades. Big money maker for them in Japan where people actually go to arcades a lot more often than anywhere else.

Japan still remembers it as a social thing, where you go out to meet people and hang out. Have fun with new people, compete to have the high score on the different machines. In the US we just want to stay home and become kings of our own castle....

Sega Does What Nintendon't

But anyhow I don't find it frustrating that they don't release their games often on the PC, if almost never. I never considered them a PC developer, and they aren't anyway, they've never been. It's similar to asking that Nintendo release their games on the PC, it's just not their place, in my opinion, barely enough audience for their games on the PC market to sell just a few thousands and that might be pushing it.

«OMG look! Nintendo just released their millionth Mario game for the PC too! I NEED IT NOW FOR MY PC!» ... nah thanks. The same would apply to Sonic and any known mascots games. Their place has always been and should always stay on Consoles, it's fine they have their niche there, and God willing it shall never change anytime soon.

Because playing fighting games is a lot more fun when playing against an opponent with zero lag on a cabinet across from you? And you can try and beat the best of that local scene? Oh and because they like to leave their house?

ITs true, arcanes in Japan are still popular. Capcom and other coin op companies still produce arcade games in JP. You're talking about an area where modern fighting games are still king, and japanese kids go for the social experience.

There's a simpler reason for it;

- Space is at a premium where you really can't stay at home and have time/space for yourself, whether you're a 15-year old student or a 40-year old family man. Even going outside, it's hard to find an open field to play a game of basketball, soccer etc.

- For one reason or another, countries in Asia (China/Japan/Korea) got past the stigma of "video games are for boys"; there's pachinko parlors, photos booths, crane machines aimed for adults, schoolgirls, children too young for games etc. before the internet arrived, which means arcades had sufficient time to be integrated into the culture a lot deeper than we did here in NA.

I'm sure that the emergence of online console gaming has hurt the market over there as well, but because it is so culturally integrated - students and salarymen would blow off steam after work in a pachinko parlor or an arcade on the way home - it's become an institution on itself.

. . . or they're all a bunch of nerdy nerds, nerdin' it up all nerd-like.
