Make the switch from DSL to Cable?

So I just ordered the locals only cable television and didn't know if my plan qualified for the internet discount, but it does so I'm thinking about switching.

Sprint DSL: 1.5/256 ($50/month)
Comcast Cable: 4/384 ($29.99/month for 6 months, then $42/month)

Obviously, the cable looks like a much better deal and my neighborhood isn't the nicest so I don't think too many people would have cable to be hogging the bandwidth.

Only thing I need to find out is if I'm outside my contract period with Sprint DSL. Also, my house is not wired for cable, so I'd have to do some home wiring or something.

Thanks!

why not? you get faster and cheaper

i live in queens nyc and i have setup cable. i hardly ever detect any bandwidth problems during peak time

i think the shared bandwith is not at your speed (in your case 4M, earthlink? thats what i use... earthlink-roadrunner), its probably a 100M or faster line but each line is capped at 4M... or something like that

i say go for it

It's comcast cable...

Also, do you guys with cable usually get the full up/down speed? 4 meg down would be pretty sweet.

i get 5M with Road runner earthlink. pretty good close to 5M when i get binary newsgroup downloads and fast sites (MS downloads, etc)

comcast... ouch... those fvcking bastards monitor how much you download. they warn you if you download over 10GB a month or something like that. i do 10GB/day!

Is this true? I guess I need to research comcast internet a little more.... I can easily do 10GB a month and probably more with just misc. downloads.

for 10 bucks more you probably can get 6M/768K. Well worth it if you download bunches. can download a 4.7 dvd image in about 1 1/2 hours.

that doesn't really happen now on cable networks

It's in Mega bits NOT bytes.. hehe.. so your theoretical peak download speed is approx 512 kilobytes/second

The people around ATL that I know that have Comcast have been very pleased with it, and I can guarantee you they are doing MUCH more than 10GB a month!

Everyone I know says it's very fast and reliable... I'm to far out in the woods for it 🙁

i've heard bad things about cable, as far as pings sucking when there are a lot of people on your network.
but if you don't play games then it doesn't matter i guess. i'm <1000ft. from my CO so i'm gonna stick with DSL. i always get at least 1.3 of 1.5mbps..and it's only 19.99/mo.

I always thought cable was the prefered method of gaming? With my DSL I always get in the upper 90ms or 100... other people are getting 30s and 40s.
