well, i'm sitting here with an ammo can right next to me, spent an hour picking it up today.

so, i'm looking for encouragement to go the whole way.

i have to order still:

a hard drive
a touch screen lcd monitor
a sound card (and replacement head unit)
a mini-itx board
an aluminum sub frame
a power supply

i'm thinking of ordering the board and sound card today... it takes me awhile to buy things 😛

Are you building an in-car PC or what?

Now that you mention it, an ammo can would make a pretty cool PC case, and it wouldn't even be all that much work to get it to work.

ammo-can PC.

this is an in-car PC for mp3's. it also has onboard lan connectivity, because i didnt want to stick a cd player on there. when i want to transfer songs to it, i just unhook everything, pull it out of the car, take it inside, hook it in, and pull songs to it.

Forget that, go wireless with it. Wireless PCI adapters are practically free anymore, all you'd have to do is pull up to your house, then transfer songs over the air 🙂

the quality of construction i'm going with is much more advanced than one guy's method of velcro, or someone else's method of rubber bands. i'm mounting everything to an aluminum subframe that will go inside the box... i'm forseeing about 10 hours worth of work getting it all together. that's with cutting the steel with hole saws, and everything. i also have a dremel, i forsee many hours of man to dremel bonding ahead...

there is only 1 pci slot on a mini-itx mobo, and it's being used by a sound card. audigy mp3 preferred... with headunit that will go in place of a standard headunit.

EDIT: oh, and i dont have a wireless lan. my house is wired lan. Cat5 cable to every room in the house 🙂

any army surplus store should have em. i got mine at a store in el cajon. "stars and stripes surplus". but if you do a google search on "ammo can", it'll pop up plenty of places.

the one i picked up was unused. didnt even see mil use. has the lettering for .50 cal on the side, though.

cheaperthandirt.com was one of the places i was thinking of ordering from, but in the end, i just went with buying it straitup.

why buy that? i want a sound card in there too.

i figure 40 or so bucks for hard drive, 20 for memory, 40 for sound card, and 100 for mobo. then 20 for power supply.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

I want one on my desk so I'll have to see about getting one here in England. Probably not much chance unless I break in to the Military Ammo supply lol and get OWNED 🙁 lol
